What we need to know first

The most useful first message describes the measurement rather than the product: what needs to be detected, at what level, through what, at what distance and inside what budget. Those five answers are usually enough to say whether the physics allows it, and that's the question worth settling before anything else is discussed.

If an existing product already solves the problem, we'll say so. If nothing off the shelf will do it, that's the work we take on.
